CIVIL WAR BOOKS BY U. S. ARMY GENERAL JOHN BARNARD, ONE SIGNED
Two books and one booklet written by renowned Civil War engineer General John Gross Barnard including an extremely rare book by the title "Notes on Sea-Coast Defence", "A Report on the Defenses of Washington" and a booklet by the title "The Gyroscope".
The following is descriptive information regarding these books and booklet.
1.) Extremely rare book written by Barnard by the title "Notes on Sea-Coast Defence", published in 1861. No other 1861 published examples of this book are available for sale. Only contemporarily published copies are available. Especially significant is this book is signed by Barnard. The book comprised of 110 numbered pages is in good over-all condition with wear to the binding, toning to the paper and stained discoloration to the front and rear paste downs and free pages including the fold-out illustration in front.
2.) Book written by Barnard titled "A Report on the Defenses of Washington" published in 1871. The binding is in good over-all condition. The interior is comprised of a fold-out illustrative plate in front, 152 pages of text and 30 fold-out plates in the back. The paper is toned from age. All the plates are complete and intact except plates 10, 16 and 23 which have separated at one fold crease. On the front free page is a contemporary inscription in ink dated 1932 from a family member.
3.) Booklet written by Barnard by the title "The Gyroscope" published in 1858. The booklet is in very good over-all condition with toning of the paper from age.
The significance of these books is the provenance that they were written by and descended from General Barnard himself through family. There are no other examples from 1861 of "Notes on Sea-Coast Defence" for sale. Especially significant is this example is signed by Barnard on the title page.
